Happy Thursday, Sault Ste. Marie! For today's Tarot meditation, I'm examining the following combination:

5 Clubs + Ace Spades: Hope is a wonderful thing, but being immaterial in nature it is also immaterial in reward. Watching desires come to pass can provide terrific validation for ones beliefs, but at the same time, this is no assurance that all of what one desired is on the works. Don't permit selective validation to create a false sense of achievement.

How can we apply this to the real world?

The leading article in the news headlines for Ontario is the news that it's now legal for people to smoke medical marijuana in public places in Ontario. Although I myself don't smoke marijuana and as it happens also have no interest in doing so (it's okay, I don't really like to drink, either - I'm a bit of a straight-edge), I think this is a terrific bit of legislation. If the law says it's okay for a physician to prescribe medicine to a patient for medical needs, who are we to say that the patient is only permitted to take the medicine in the privacy of their own home or at designated clinics? Granted, intravenously delivered cocktails for cancer patients (for example) would require a certain time and place since they require at least a nurse to administer.

But sparking up? That's easy-peasy, and despite critics complaining about the dangers of second-hand marijuana smoke, you don't hear them getting up in arms about the dangers of second-hand cigarette smoke. Hypocrisy, much? While this legal decision can be justly named a victory for the movement to legalize marijuana, it still falls far short of what many supporters want to see.

Is this decision good news? It's absolutely good news as far as patients' rights go. But in many ways, it doesn't go nearly far enough in getting the government off our backs, and in itself is no guarantee that we'll see more adventurous legislation in the near future.
