My fiance and I are planning our own wedding and paying for it ourselves, but my mother won't stop interfering and trying to invite her own guests. How should I handle this?

First of all, congratulations on your impending marriage, Anonymous Seastar; I wish you all the best. Obviously this is a great life transition for you, and that's reflected in the cards which describe you as letting go of old friendships and connections in order to prepare for your ever-after. And why not? Marriage requires compromise. If you're feeling irritated about your intrusive mother, then perhaps the greatest reason for this is that you feel like you're making appropriate sacrifices, but your mother is making none? Think about it.
As for your mother, yes, she's meddlesome and it's also reflected in the cards. She's clearly focused on her idea of how things are, as opposed to your desire of how they will be. She keeps trying to bring things and people together that have no business being together. She wants to syncretize all the things happening in her life so that it feels like a cooperative whole. In a way, her desire for this is very sweet because she just wants everybody to move forward together and get along. But of course, this does nothing to acknowledge your goals and desires.
Ultimately, you need to understand that as irritating as your mother may be right now, she really has no power over your wedding day. It's going to happen the way you plan it, and her plans don't matter. Yes, she wants this day to be full of good fortune and happy recognition, but that's her desires, and like I said, she doesn't have any power here. This is all about your enjoying the warm spotlight of praise and adoration from your friends and family. Enjoy the accomplishment of the day and your success in finding somebody who makes you happy to be yourself.
